In terms of documentary photography my interest lies within the observation of scenes and people, to capture a hidden story. I seek the emotions, subtleties, tensions, little gestures and underlying tonality. I like to compare it to the humanistic approach to dance, recalling Pina Bausch's dance theater or Chrystal Pite's investigations.
Pina would ask you to show her in movement the memory of the first time you laughed very hard or how you would behave when you’ve lost something. Chrystal Pite would dance "Betroffenheit"- revealing a suspended state through movement, where verbal language can't describe what's being felt. She talks about her interest in zooming out on a universal level and zooming in to a particular
story. Just like them, I want to connect with the subject - „communicating something real, something legible, something meaningful. That doesn’t mean serving up the obvious.“

The second world war marks a time within Germany’s history, which has traumatized the heart of mankind. I remember asking my grandmother to tell me about the war before going to bed. She would sit next to me in the dark and I would hear her voice in the off.
My father would make me listen to the diary of Anne Frank. It is a book of the writings from the Dutch language diary kept by the little girl Anne Frank while she was in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.
I would listen to it over and over, feeling severely affected. My family made sure to never forget. And at one point I had the urge to portray the death camps, which we can visit today..to never forget..
